Amazing Brain Benefits of Magnesium L-Threonate

Updated: May 21, 2021

Magnesium is one of the most abundant minerals in the human body. It plays a crucial role in all areas of the body, yet a majority of people may be deficient in it. Magnesium is important for cardiovascular health, muscular health, mitochondrial health, bone health, digestion, and more! There are many different forms of magnesium. Commonly used forms consist of Magnesium Glycinate, Magnesium Citrate, Magnesium Oxide, Magnesium L-Threonate, and others. These forms have different characteristics and can be used by the body in different ways.

For brain health, Magnesium L-Threonate is one of my favorite nutrients. From brain aging, headaches, anxiety, concussions, and post concussions - it is an amazing nutrient. Magnesium L-Threonate is able to cross the blood-brain-barrier, a protective mechanism for the brain, thus it is the only form of magnesium that has been shown to effectively raise the brain's magnesium levels. Magnesium L-Threonate influences the brain by supporting healthy synaptic density and function.

Here is what the research says about Magnesium L-Threonate:

-Decreased/reversed brain aging on average by 9 ± 3.5 years (1)

-Improvement in executive function and cognitive processing (1)

-Improved working memory capacity of 13.1 % at 6 weeks compared to placebo (1)

-Increased overall cognitive ability and reduced fluctuation in cognitive ability (1)

"After 6 weeks of treatment, the average brain age of the MMFS-01 group deceased from 69.6 ± 4.2 years to 60.6 ± 5.6 years, an improvement of 9.0 ± 3.5 years, and persisted after 12 weeks of treatment with 9.4 ± 3.5 years of improvement. In contrast, there was little change in the average brain age in the placebo group, improving 0.6 ± 2.3 years at Week 6 and 0.8 ± 3.5 years at Week 12." (1)

"MMFS-01 treatment resulted in an improvement in multiple individual cognitive domains. After 6 weeks of treatment with MMFS-01, we observed improvements in executive function, and working memory, both associated with the prefrontal cortex, and after 12 weeks, we observed improvement in episodic memory, associated with the hippocampus. These observations suggest that the mechanisms of action of MMFS-01 might work at different time scales in different brain areas." (1)

"We determined that MMFS-01 improved overall cognitive ability, both in absolute terms and compared to the placebo group." (1)

"The current study demonstrated efficacy of MMFS-01, a compound designed to increase brain synapse density, on restoration of cognitive abilities. This study highlights the importance of increasing neuronal intracellular magnesium, a key intermediary of synapse density control, on improving cognitive abilities in older adults." (1)

Of course, your health starts with the food (fuel) you eat. Nutrition is always the foundation, eating healthful foods that positively impact your health and brain always comes first. Adding specific nutrients on top of those nutritious foods can have a profound impact on your health and well-being.

There are numerous other nutrients that have a positive impact on the brain. Magnesium L-Threonate is one of our favorites.
